Job overview and responsibilities
The role of Sr. Manager – Drug Abatement Regulatory Compliance is responsible for the Regulatory & Compliance functions of United’s Drug Abatement program and serves as the company’s Designated Employer Representative (DER). This role ensures United’s Drug and Alcohol testing program complies to DOT and FAA regulations 49 CFR Part 40 and 14 CFR Part 120, and in addition, company-specific Non-DOT policies. Reporting to the Director of Corporate Medical Operations, the position collaborates with the Sr. Manager of Drug Abatement Operations to embed regulatory compliance into operational processes. Furthermore, the role is responsible for managing Drug Abatement training, overseeing self-auditing, and leading a team of direct reports to ensure the program’s compliance and overall effectiveness.
- Regulatory Compliance
- Ensure strict adherence to all DOT and FAA Drug & Alcohol testing regulations, while maintaining the highest standards of compliance
- Oversee internal auditing of Drug Abatement operation to ensure excellence and regulatory compliance
- Responsible for the companys drug and alcohol policy oversight and updates
- Lead Audit Initiatives
- Manage and implement thorough self-audit programs across the entire Drug Abatement organization, promoting a team that is both efficient and compliant
- Team Leadership
- Provide leadership and guidance to a team of direct reports, fostering a collaborative and high-performing work environment
- Training
- Lead and execute extensive training initiatives for the Drug Abatement organization, ensuring the development of a proficient and compliant team
- Operational Oversight
- Embed regulatory compliance into operational processes and support broader Drug Abatement operational functions as needed
- Stakeholder Engagement
- Build and maintain strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including United’s Employee Assistance Program, Legal, Labor, Operating Workgroups, HR, vendors, and regulatory bodies
QualificationsWhat’s needed to succeed (Minimum Qualifications):
- Bachelors degree or 4 years of relevant work experience
- Extensive expertise with 5+ years in navigating and ensuring compliance with DOT regulatory standards, demonstrating a deep understanding of regulatory frameworks and operational excellence
- Proven track record with 4+ years of leadership experience, effectively managing and mentoring direct reports to achieve organizational goals
- Skilled in analyzing, enhancing, and effectively communicating regulatory and compliance topics to leadership at all levels within the organization
- Demonstrated ability to lead and inspire a diverse team, supported by proven supervisory experience
- Strong critical thinking skills paired with sharp business acumen to drive informed decision-making
- Proven expertise in problem-solving, coupled with exceptional organizational abilities to manage complex tasks efficiently
- Proficient in Microsoft Office tools, including Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, and Teams, ensuring seamless collaboration and productivity
- Adept at responding to urgent situations with agility, including participation in a 24/7 support as needed
- Willingness and ability to travel up to 10 as required
- Legally authorized to work in the United States without the need for employer sponsorship

- Reliable, punctual attendance is an essential function of the position

- Experienced in auditing processes, showcasing a meticulous approach to compliance and operational excellence
The base pay range for this role is $115,330.00 to $157,190.00.
The base salary range/hourly rate listed is dependent on job-related, non-discriminatory factors such as experience, education, and skills. This position is also eligible for bonus and/or long-term incentive compensation awards.
