Primary Objective of the Position:
The Apprentice, Ground Service Equipment (GSE) is responsible for assisting with the maintenance, inspection, troubleshooting, overhaul, and repair of Cargojets Ground Service Equipment to ensure operational reliability, safety, and compliance. The successful candidate will perform duties in accordance with company policies, maintenance procedures, and regulatory requirements while developing the technical knowledge and practical experience required to become a Licensed Automotive Service Technician.
Essential Position Functions:
- Assist with the maintenance, servicing, troubleshooting, inspection, overhaul, and repair of Ground Service Equipment in accordance with approved maintenance procedures and company policies.
- Support the servicing, inspection, troubleshooting, and repair of Cargojets fleet of Ground Service Equipment to ensure operational reliability and minimize downtime.
- Assist with preventive maintenance programs and daily GSE maintenance assignments.
- Assist in inspecting equipment conditions and completing repairs, replacements, and adjustments on components including electrical systems, hydraulic systems, brakes, and controls.
- Ensure all GSE equipment is maintained and serviced in a timely and efficient manner to support operational requirements.
- Complete work orders accurately, including labour hours, repairs completed, and parts utilized.
- Assist with preparing parts lists and ordering replacement parts as required.
- Maintain knowledge of GSE manuals, maintenance procedures, technical documentation, and applicable company and government regulations.
- Maintain shop equipment, airside equipment, vehicles, and maintenance support equipment in safe working condition.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment in compliance with safety standards and procedures.
- Report safety concerns, hazards, incidents, or operational risks through the Safety Management System (SMS) and directly to the Supervisor.
- Operate equipment such as high lifts and forklifts as required to support maintenance activities.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives related to equipment reliability, maintenance processes, and workplace safety.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- High School Diploma required.
- Post-secondary education in Automotive, Heavy Equipment, Mechanical, or a related technical field preferred.
- Enrolled in or willingness to pursue a 310S or 310T Automotive Service Technician Apprenticeship Program.
- Basic knowledge of mechanical maintenance procedures and inspection systems is considered an asset.
- Knowledge of GSE equipment, materials, and parts is considered an asset.
- Knowledge of workplace safety practices and fire prevention procedures.
- Ability to use measuring instruments, hand tools, and basic testing equipment.
- Strong troubleshooting, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
- Excellent communication skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities under pressure.
- Basic computer skills, including Microsoft Word and Excel.
- Ability to pass written examinations required by the applicable provincial authority.
Job Requirements & Work Environment
- Valid Provincial Drivers License.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a Restricted Area Identity Card (RAIC).
- Ability to obtain and maintain an Airside Vehicle Operators Permit (AVOP).
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs for equipment and component replacement.
- Ability to operate high lifts and forklifts.
- Ability to work from heights and use ladders safely.
- Ability to work in hangar and outdoor environments in varying weather conditions.
- Ability to work in restricted airport areas and around active aircraft operations.
- Ability to work rotating shifts, including evenings, weekends, holidays, and on-call support as operationally required.
- Physically capable of performing the essential duties of the position.
