Job Summary

Provide safety and quality engineering services for NAV CANADA’s technology projects to support the requirements and needs of Transport Canada safety regulations, the NAV CANADA safety management processes, the ISO 9001 quality system, and the safety and quality requirements of NAV CANADA’s commercial projects that are implemented by the company. The ultimate purpose of the job is to ensure that the Air Navigation Systems implemented by the company are developed to adequate safety and quality standards and are sufficiently safe to be put into operations.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Perform Safety Risk Management (SRM) in accordance with NAV CANADA safety processes and international standards (e.g., ICAO, EUROCONTROL, EUROCAE) for technology projects. This includes safety planning, generation of safety requirements, safety analysis, safety case, safety reporting, and reliability analysis.

  • Lead or participate in identifying, analysing and mitigating aviation safety hazards for projects. Work with and support cross-functional teams including Systems Engineering, Testing, Human Factors, Cybersecurity, etc. for the implementation of the project. Make recommendations regarding the design, development and implementation of Air Navigation Service (ANS) systems to ensure they are based on sound safety and reliability engineering methodologies and practices.

  • Coordinate NAV CANADA’s suppliers and contractors for compliance with established safety criteria, specifications, standards, practices and methodologies for implementing NAV CANADA’s technology initiatives and upgrades.

  • Establish and carry out system safety programs in accordance with customer and international standards for NAV CANADA’s commercial engineering projects.

  • Support the ongoing development and evolution of NAV CANADA’s safety and quality processes and tools (e.g., safety management training, safety information tracking tool).

  • Support safety and quality audits.

Job Requirements

Education:

  • Graduation from a recognized university with a degree in computer science or engineering.

Experience:

  • 5 Years of progressive experience in the software or systems engineering of sophisticated products such as those used in transportation systems.

  • Experience of design, development, and/or testing of technology system/product (e.g., computer software, computer hardware, or both).

  • Experience in Hazard Analysis and Risk Assessment techniques.

  • Experience in System Safety Engineering processes and related safety analysis techniques (such as fault tree analysis, failure modes and effects analysis, system-theoretic process analysis, and/or reliability analysis).

  • Experience with transportation related systems, operations, and procedures.

  • Experience with system/software and safety processes compliant with industry/government/military standards (such as DO-178C, ED-109A, MIL-STD-882E).

Knowledge:

  • Knowledge of systems engineering and computer engineering concepts, principles, design criteria, standard practices, techniques and methods involved in safety analysis and quality reviews. 

  • Knowledge of system safety and software safety as they apply to an engineering environment.

  • Knowledge of techniques required to independently plan, schedule, conduct, and coordinate system safety assurance for an engineering project.

  • Knowledge of the general business processes including planning, budgeting, directing, controlling and communicating.

  • Knowledge of Software and Safety Engineering processes and standards in the industry such as DO-178C, ED-109A, or ED-153.

  • Knowledge of quality auditing techniques, quality processes, and quality standards such as ISO 9001 and CMMI.

Abilities:

  • Possess strong analytical skills and an ability to solve complex safety issues.

  • Ability to write comprehensive safety analysis reports on project results, conclusions, and recommendations to defend and explain findings and actions taken.

  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing with internal and external stakeholders on all safety related technical and management matters.

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a larger team, supporting colleagues when appropriate.

Working conditions:

  • This is a hybrid position with a minimum – 3 days per week on site required.
